Are you tired of always being the shithead? Do you need a few strategy tips on how to get better at this fun card game? If you’ve answered yes to both questions, then you’ve come to the right place!
In case you are wondering what the hell Shithead is, read the rules first.
OK, down to the nitty gritty… but first, a short disclaimer: these strategy tips are made up of my observations and will not necessarily save you from being a shithead every time:)
Shithead strategy tip No. 1: The mulligan
Don’t know what the mulligan is? It’s the first phase of the game where you have the option to change the face up cards with cards in your hand. This is probably one of the most important phases of the game. It decides your end game and if you screw up here, you’ll have a way harder time winning.
So what should you do? It’s actually pretty simple. Put your highest cards, tens and deuces on the face up piles. Basically you want to give yourself the best chance to play a card at the end, otherwise you’ll just be hoping for a good situation in the end game and you’ll keep picking up the discard pile… that’s not what you want.
Shithead strategy tip No. 2: Watch and plan ahead
Like in any other card game, you should always keep track of cards (which ware already played and which are still out there) and plan ahead. In Shithead this is actually very important, but hard to do.
In case you are like most people and not like Rain Man, you should have a hard time remembering everything that has happened. The good thing is you don’t really have to. You can just track the important cards like Tens and Deuces, so you know how many are still out there.
There is also another very important thing to keep track of. When someone picks up the discard pile always remember:
- how many cards there ware
- the highest 3-4 cards
- the special cards that ware in it
If you manage to remember all that, you’ll know pretty much exactly how to play against that player for the next few rounds. This also brings me to another point…
…since you get a bunch of information when someone picks up the discard pile, you should treat this game as chess. PLAN A FEW MOVES AHEAD, you have enough info.
Shithead strategy tip No. 3: Regular discarding strategy
There is one basic strategy on discarding in this game: Always discard the lowest card you can, unless you have a good reason not to do that.
What would be a good reason not to play the lowest possible card? For example, if you have 9, T, A and you know that your opponent is not holding a Ten, Deuce or Ace, and the discard pile is huge, you might want to consider just sticking it to him with an Ace instead of letting him find a way out.
Shithead strategy tip No. 4: Defense
Discard Tens and Deuces one by one, because you might need them somewhere along the line and you don’t really gain anything by discarding more than one each turn. This is a basic strategy that will help you defend yourself from having to pick up the discard pile.
Also don’t waste these cards, if you have an option to play something else, do it!
