The knuckle roll is a popular chip trick that looks really cool. It can also be done with regular coins, so basically it’s not a trick that you can only do at a poker table.
The good news is it’s pretty easy to learn, but the bad news is that it’s hard to master. You will probably succeed in getting the chip pass all your knuckles in your first five tries, but you’ll need a lot of practice to get that smooth movement that really makes it look awesome.
So, let’s see how the knuckle roll is done step by step…
Place a chip between your thumb and index finger as you see on the picture:
You should place it near the base of your index finger, but if that doesn’t work for you, try experimenting a bit.
Now the action starts. Push the chip up with your thumb, lower your index finger and lift your middle finger. The chip should fall over and you can catch it between your middle and index finger by snapping the two back in to position.
The rest of this chip trick is basically a repetition of Step 2. When you have the chip between your middle and index finger, push it up with your index finger, lower your middle finger and lift your ring finger. Snap your fingers back into place and the chip should be upright between your middle and ring finger.
Do the same thing as in steps 2 and 3, except use your middle, ring and pinky fingers. This one might be a bit tougher because, well, the pinky is the smallest finger and it’s kind of hard to catch a chip with it, but with a little practice anything can be done.
Now you’re at the end. You can either do everything in reverse and keep going backward and forward or you can do a continuous circular motion by flipping the chip back with your thumb.
Flipping the chip back is easy. Just let go a little with your pinky so that the chip slides through and catch it with your thumb. Now use your thumb to drag the chip below your palm and snap it back to place between your thumb and index finger.
- Play with your starting position, so you can find what suits you best.
- Try using smaller and thinner chips/coins at first.
- Stretch your fingers before you start
Enjoy knuckle rolling!
